WHO IS DI POUPARD?
In 1984 Di started the South African Horse Care Unit for the S.P.C.A., which she subsequently managed for 9 years, until early 1994. During this time Di developed her `Equine Visual Weight Estimate' which enabled Horse Care Unit Inspectors a consistent 'on site' way of assessing the physical weight condition of under nourished horses. Together with this 'Equine Visual Weight Condition Estimate', Di also developed a diet program aimed at safely improving the weight condition of horses in S.P.C.A. She provided care, as well as on-going advice, for concerned but often ignorant horse owners. These 'Equi-Sense Equine Diet Sheets' were published in the 'Journal Of Equine Veterinary Science - Volume 12 - No. 5 - May 1993' under a paper she authored, titled `Rehabilitation Of Horses Suffering From Malnutrition In South Africa' and was presented at the 'First International Conference On Equine Rescue' on February 6-7, 1993, in Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A. Between the seven years from 1985 to1992, six thousand, four hundred and ninety (6,490) horses were inspected covering 194,994 km throughout South Africa. During these active Horse Care Unit years Di realized that many horses were being neglected due to behavioral problems. The attitude seemed to be "if I can't ride my horse why should I feed it, grass and water is good enough". The majority of neglected horses inspected were Thoroughbred ex-racehorses, where only grass and water minus concentrates could mean a slow death by starvation and vermin infestation. In 1994, after leaving the S.P.C.A. Horse Care Unit, Di continued her research on developing her 'Equi-Sense Personal Contact Method' aimed at helping horses and owners regain a positive relationship based on mutual respect. This on-going research has resulted in the successful rehabilitation of over three thousand (3,000) psychologically damaged horses, of which, only approximately fifty five (55) horses showed little or no improvement due to electric shock abuse, hormone imbalance, or break down of a horse's nervous system caused by movement restricted 'flooding' techniques. Di received International Recognition when she was invited to present her 'Equi-Sense Personal Contact Method' at the 1995 'International Conference On Human-Animal Interaction' in Geneva, Switzerland under a paper popularly titled ` Positive Behavior Training Of Equine'.
